Michelin Tyre Academy ‘Class of 2016’ get in the groove at Dundee factory

Stoke-on-Trent, October 06, 2016

Tyre dealership staff selected to join the Michelin Tyre Academy ‘Class of 2016’ travelled to the company’s Dundee factory for the course’s second module, as their journey towards becoming expert technicians continues.

The manufacturer flew a group of 17 attendees – selected from dealerships of the Michelin Auto Professional network – to Scotland for the second Tyre Academy module, which combined classroom-based training with a tour of the city’s Michelin tyre factory.

The Tyre Academy’s second module centred on an in-depth exploration of the technology that goes into Michelin’s safe, durable and high-performing tyres, as well as detailing and analysing the company’s production processes.

Mark Meagher, Retail Programme Development Manager at Michelin, says: “It’s one thing to learn about Michelin’s premium tyres in a classroom, but there’s no substitute for on-site education – and the staff that made the trip to Dundee got to see what goes into Michelin fitments first-hand.”

This year’s Tyre Academy course was launched in June, with the first module held at Michelin’s Stoke-on-Trent headquarters. The initial module covered key technical knowledge of tyre sidewall markings and construction, the legal issues surrounding tyres, and how to provide excellent customer service.

A separate Tyre Academy module was also held earlier this year at a location near Gatwick Airport, with Michelin inviting independent dealerships in the south of the country to send their best and brightest.

Meagher adds: “Only dealerships that pass our stringent quality audit are granted the right to become Michelin Auto Professional advocates, and to display the Michelin Certified Centre signage.

“It’s Michelin’s duty to reward such dedication to excellence, and the Tyre Academy programme is a great example of what we can do to help our Michelin Auto Professional dealerships better their business.”

Michelin is Dundee’s largest industrial employer, with almost 1,000 staff at the factory in Baldovie.

In 2015 the tyre manufacturer announced an investment of around £52m at the site over the next five years – money which will be spent installing new machinery to make larger tyres, and building a new 20,000m² warehouse.
