SOIL AND WATER SOLUTIONS PUTS DRIVER SAFETY FIRST WITH WHEELY-SAFE TECHNOLOGY

Hertfordshire-based Soil & Water Solutions has improved the safety of its fleet of eight 32-tonne tippers by installing Wheely-Safe’s latest generation of intelligent tyre pressure monitoring systems (TPMS), wheel loss and wheel rim temperature sensors.

The business, part of the Toureen Goup, puts health & safety and compliance at the top of its list of priorities – priding itself on utilising the most up-to-date technologies and equipment to ensure its drivers and vulnerable road users are protected.

The company had been looking for a system to monitor the health of its tyres and wheels, before discovering Wheely-Safe’s multi award-winning technology.

Mark Weller, Haulage Director, Soil & Water Solutions, says: “As a FORS Gold member we take safety incredibly seriously and this system fitted seamlessly onto our Scania XT tippers. The trucks are regularly working on aggressive off-road surfaces, so the tyres and wheels are susceptible to damage.

“Thankfully, we’ve never had an issue with loose wheel nuts before but you can’t second guess these things. This technology eliminates the risk as we know that at the very first sign of a problem, an alert will be sent to the driver, who can pull over and investigate fully. Plus, we have the reassurance that the sensors are constantly monitoring tyre pressures and hub temperatures too.”

Soil & Water Solutions has specified Wheely-Safe’s external TPMS sensors, which replace the normal valve caps on every tyre. These are fitted alongside a pair of wheel loss and temperature sensors on each wheel, with solar-powered receivers fitted in the cab. Battery-powered boosters are mounted under the chassis to ensure signals from even the rear axle are transmitted to the receiver with ease.

Wheely-Safe provided training to help fit the system, that was installed by Weller, alongside the firm’s tyre dealer Road Rubber Tyres.

“It was really simple to fit, is proving easy to operate and the driver feedback has been very positive,” adds Weller.

“Daily walkaround inspections are now so much easier, no matter what the weather conditions; plus it gives our drivers the confidence that if a tyre or wheel issue develops mid-journey, they will be notified immediately and can take the appropriate action.”

Wheely-Safe Ltd is a technology start-up founded in 2010 by two lifelong friends – Gary Thomas, a Director of his own transport compliance consultancy, and Gary Broadfield, a Director of Technology and serial inventor for a large Japanese electronics manufacturer. Together they brought the marriage of skills required to help solve wheel loss issues in the automotive sector, and to tackle the huge number of vehicles driving every day on under-inflated tyres. The early years of Wheely-Safe concentrated on attaining worldwide patent protection and technology small enough to fit near the wheels of all vehicle types, from cars and vans to trucks and trailers – with its first products launched into the market during 2018. www.wheely-safe.com
