BRITISH GAS AND MICHELIN TYRES KEEP THE FLAME ALIVE, AS PARTNERSHIP ENTERS SECOND DECADE

  • MICHELIN Agilis CrossClimate tyres to be fitted on 2,500 new vans joining British Gas’s fleet, starting this year.
  • The all-season tyre family continues to play a crucial role in keeping British Gas engineers mobile no matter the extremes of weather.

British Gas has extended its pivotal relationship with Michelin, having specified the all-season Agilis CrossClimate tyre for 2,500 new vans that will be joining its fleet through this year and next as part of a major renewal.

The energy provider, which with 8,000 vehicles operates one of the largest light commercial vehicle fleets in the UK, has fitted tyres from Michelin’s CrossClimate family since 2015. It introduced the Agilis CrossClimate van-specific product in 2018 after the original CrossClimate fitment exceeded expectations on the fleet’s smaller car-derived vans.

Rob Simister, Director of Fleet Operations at British Gas parent company Centrica, says: “We rely on Michelin to get our engineers to callouts in all weathers. That’s especially important in the winter months when it’s essential that we get to customers quickly if their boiler has broken down and left them without heating.”

British Gas sets its service providers KPIs predicated on fitting the French manufacturer’s all-season rubber to 95% of all tyre replacements, with the use of MICHELIN Agilis CrossClimate or MICHELIN CrossClimate family dictated by vehicle size.

British Gas has continued to benchmark Michelin’s all-season tyre against rival products during the last 10 years, only to find nothing else delivers the same combination of traction, longevity and versatility.

“There’s also a productivity gain for us, as we avoid the downtime that would be associated with swapping from winter to summer tyres each year, which lowers the cost of management and helps us deliver the highest levels of service,” adds Simister.

The MICHELIN Agilis CrossClimate has leading dry braking performance and an A-rated wet grip for safety. Featuring a unique V-shaped tread with large blocks and wide grooves, it is certified as 3PMSF for traction on challenging surfaces such as mud, gravel and snow.

A third of British Gas’s current fleet are BEVs – making it one of the largest electric-powered light commercial vehicle fleets in the UK and well on course to achieve net zero by 2035 – and they wear the EV-ready MICHELIN Agilis CrossClimate tyre.

Other parent company brands within the operator’s commercial fleet include PH Jones, Scottish Gas and Centrica Business Solutions.
