Agricultural machinery specialist Emyr Evans has marked 40 successful years of business – and three decades as a Massey Ferguson dealership – by giving the first new tractor it ever sold a fresh lease of life.
The beautifully restored Massey Ferguson 3065 is shod with the latest MICHELIN AgriBib 2 tyres. Saracens, which is part of the Michelin Quality Centre network and is led by Owain Roberts, sourced and fitted the tyres – 340/85 R24 fitments on the front and 420/85 R34 on the rear – as Emyr Evans’ trusted service provider.
The Massey Ferguson was originally purchased in late December 1995 for delivery in the New Year. The model represented the last of the manufacturer’s 3000 series of mid-range, multi-use tractors.
Berwyn Evans, Director at the business, says: “The tractor was sold to a farmer in Anglesey and has been working there ever since. Due to the location by the Irish Sea, it needed some TLC but was still in working order.
“As the tractor is now 30 years old, it’s been a challenge tracking down replacement parts but a worthwhile one. When it came to fitting new tyres to this special tractor the only choice was Michelin, which is king in the agricultural world.”
Emyr Evans founded the business with wife Gwenda in 1986, initially trading in used tractors until becoming a Massey Ferguson dealership for the Isle of Anglesey and Gwynedd in 1996, operating from Gaerwen. In 2002 the area was extended to include the whole of North Wales up to the Cheshire border, and a second depot was opened at Denbigh.
The company has developed over the years with the addition of other major agricultural franchises that include JCB, Fendt, McHale, Pottinger and Bailey. Sons Gwynedd and Berwyn Evans run the business’s respective depots today.
The MICHELIN AgriBib has its own long history of top-level performance having been introduced to the market back in 2012. The second-generation of the product is designed to offer greater traction than the original thanks to an improved tread pattern with 45-degree lugs, longevity and robustness. It has a high load index to match the increasing weight of modern tractors. The tyre also features an extra 4mm of rubber on the central rib for more effective self-cleaning.
Michelin’s agricultural tyre in the 1990s was the Bib’X M18. Comparing that at size 16.9 R34 with the equivalent AgriBib 2 now, underlines the huge transformation that has occurred since in the pursuit of greater productivity. While the Bib’X M18 was designed to carry a maximum load per tyre of 2,060kg at 40km/h (133A8), the AgriBib 2 can carry 3,075kg per tyre at 40km/h (147A8). An increase in carrying capacity of 1,015kg per tractor tyre over the last three decades.
The tractor will be on show at the company’s 40th Anniversary Open Days taking place on March 11 and 12 at its Denbigh home on Colomendy Industrial Estate. The restored Massey Ferguson will take pride of place in a collection of vintage tractors from the manufacturer.
