PPC Group has extended its close working relationship with Mac’s Truck Rental after taking delivery of two new high-spec 32-tonne 8×2 rigids, one of which replaces the first truck supplied to the business by Mac’s Truck Rental in 2020.

The Volvo FH 500 Globetrotter and Scania P500 represent the sixth and seventh vehicles supplied on long-term hire to PPC by Mac’s Truck Rental. Featuring custom-built cheesewedge and flatbed bodies respectively, the builds incorporate refinements to the designs that have been developed through close collaboration between the rental business and the customer, as part of an ongoing project to fine-tune the spec of its vehicles.

Dan Broda, Operations Director for PPC Group, says: “What sets Mac’s Truck Rental apart is its responsiveness and willingness to support us at every stage. Whenever I pick up the phone, I know I’ll reach someone who understands our operation inside out. Over the years, this partnership has allowed us to make small changes to the specs which translate into genuine improvements for our drivers, and efficiency savings for our business.”

Collaborative refinement delivers high-spec builds
With its body built in-house by sister company Mac’s Truck Sales at its Huddersfield manufacturing facility, the new Volvo has been designed to support PPC Group’s demanding lifting operations. Primarily used for the delivery and collection of plant and HVAC equipment, it has been mounted with a remote-control Fassi F660RA.2.26 crane, with Mac’s unique front stabiliser leg design fitted to the truck to safely deliver a lifting capacity of up to 3,100 kilograms at 16 metres, around a full 360 degrees.

Other key features include hydraulic bifold ramps, which help to lower the loading angle for certain machines, while improving driver visibility and significantly reduce drag, helping to save fuel. Other elements of the spec include an 18,000-pound electric remote-control winch, hydraulic landing legs, one of the lowest bed heights available, and 24 lashing rings to aid load flexibility.

The flatbed body mounted to the Scania P500 includes the same model of Fassi crane, with the capacity to deliver the same maximum lifting weight, with a 16 metre reach, to both the side and rear. The robust, hardwood deck has been fitted with seven heavy-duty lashing points on each side, helping to provide security for a wide range of loads.

Making the right choices for maximum operational impact
Both trucks feature a rear lifting and steering axle for improved traction, manoeuvrability, and better fuel efficiency when running light or unladen, plus rear air-suspension, alloy wheels and air horns. The builds also include stainless steel toolboxes, chain wells for secure storage, alongside Mac’s fall restraint system to aid driver safety during loading and unloading. Fully galvanised components such as side raves and headboard have been included to ensure superior longevity.

Working to customer requests, Mac’s Truck Rental arranged for the Volvo cab to be enhanced with an assortment of Kelsa light bars, LED front and rear strobes and a roof beacon bar. Both trucks feature work lights in the headboard, and perimeter lighting to both sides. A FORS Gold-spec four-way camera system further enhances safety and security, whilst aluminium chequered mud wings improve styling and durability.

Mac’s Truck Rental’s long-term hire offering provides complete cost transparency, bundling servicing, inspections, maintenance, emergency roadside assistance, and road fund licensing into a predictable monthly payment. With no residual value risk or vehicle disposal to manage at the end of the contract, it allows PPC Group to remain focused on its business operations.

Upon delivery of the new trucks, a team from Mac’s provided comprehensive crane handover training, helping the customer ensure its drivers can extract the maximum performance and reach from its newest assets.

On the road up to seven days per week, the new vehicles are expected to complete at least two deliveries per day Monday to Friday, with workloads rising at weekends due to increased customer demand. Expected to cover up to 100,000 kilometres each year, they join a 21-strong truck fleet, which also includes five purchased outright from Mac’s Truck Sales.

Founded in 2017, the transport division of PPC Group offers specialist lifting and haulage services to customers across the UK from its base of operations in Winchfield, Hampshire.
